Grape sugar, also called glucose or dextrose, is a simple sugar that the body can use as an energy source. Glucose is naturally present in the body and is transported via the blood to the body's cells. The terms glucose, grape sugar, and dextrose are used for the same type of sugar.
What are glucose tablets?
Glucose tablets are tablets containing grape sugar and are a convenient way to carry glucose with you. They are available from several different manufacturers and in various sizes, shapes, and flavors.
For people with diabetes, blood sugar can sometimes become too low, so it's common to have a quick source of carbohydrates available. Those with diabetes should follow the individual advice on treating low blood sugar they have received from their diabetes clinic.
Grape sugar, glucose, and dextrose – what's the difference?
It may seem like three different things, but grape sugar, glucose, and dextrose practically refer to the same simple sugar. Therefore, different names may appear on product packaging.
Common granulated sugar, sucrose, is not the same thing. Sucrose consists of two sugars: glucose and fructose.
Different types of grape sugar tablets
Grape sugar and glucose tablets are available from several different manufacturers, and the products may differ in, among other things:
- size and shape
- flavor
- amount of glucose and carbohydrates
- packaging
- number of tablets
Therefore, always check the product's contents and nutritional declaration. Tablets that look similar do not necessarily have the same content.
Storage of grape sugar in everyday life
Glucose tablets often need to be carried everywhere – for example, in a pocket, jacket, bag, school bag, or gym bag.
Soft original packaging can become worn or flattened over time when carried in everyday life. The tablets can then crumble or be exposed to dirt and moisture.
